Description of the exhibitions:
In two rooms with original late Gothic ceilings you can see exhibits from three thematic circles.

At present, there are sarcophagi of former Dukes of Pomerania transferred from the castle crypt. Made of tin in the 16th and 17th centuries, they are one of the most valuable surviving remains of the Griffin dynasty and are a source of knowledge about the funerary customs and art of old Pomerania in the modern era.

Also on display are everyday objects from the 16th and 17th centuries – paintings, furniture, weapons and armour. These are objects similar to those that reached Szczecin and Pomerania by various routes, and were part of the estates of the dukes ruling the region and their families.

The last circle of the collection comprises epitaphs and other valuable church foundations, which were created in Central and Western Pomerania throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.

The dungeons under the Prison Tower are among the oldest original fragments of the Szczecin castle. The Prison Tower (at the corner of today’s Kuśnierska and Grodzka Streets) was built together with the southern wing in the years 1435-1490. It was part of the defense system of the prince’s residence. The cellars under the tower come from the same construction phase as it and were not transformed as a result of later works, including: increasing its floor. Stairs made in the thickness of the wall lead to the dungeons. They lead to three rooms with barrel vaults. There are two cells measuring 2.30 m x 3.35 m and almost 4 m high each, and a corridor (length 5.20 m x width 0.90 m x height 4.27 m). The cell door opened to the inside and closed from the outside, which made it impossible to break it from the inside. Prisoners in their cells were probably chained to the wall. The corridor was intended for a guard. The recess in the southern wall in front of the cells in the corridor could serve as a seat for the person guarding the prisoners.
