Study of Lubinus

Closed from August 22!

In the early 17th century Eilhard Lubinus, at the request of Duke Philip II, conducted his long research work. Thanks to him the history of old Pomerania can be reconstructed. He created the Great Map of the Duchy of Pomerania whose precious copy was bought by the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle in Szczecin, which became an impulse to create an exposition dedicated to Lubinus’ works and life.

The exhibition brings us closer not only to the history of how the map was created, which is considered as one of the greatest cartographic achievements of the 17th century, but also demonstrates what the work of cartographers looked like in Europe at the time.

The exhibition includes exceptional copies of European cartography created by Lubinus.

The Great Map of the Duchy of Pomerania (unique printing from 1758), and its two atlas editions (after 1630 and from 1638), the Map of Principality of Rügen (published between 1633 and 1640), and a unique copy of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia (edition from 1576). In the study there are also astronomical measurement instruments from the collection of the Przypkowscy Clock Museum in Jędrzejów and a model of the 17th-century frigate lent by the Wolgast Museum.

Eilhard Lubinus (his real name was Eilert Lübben)  was born in a Lutheran pastor family on March 23, 1565 in Westerstede. Although he was, above all a distinguished mathematician and geographer, he also left his mark in the field of poetry and theology. He is best known as the creator of two impressive maps – the Map of the Principality of Rügen and the subsequent Great Map of the Duchy of Pomerania, which is often referred to as the Lubinus’ Map. Many editions of his works formed the basis on which several generations of cartographers based  their later works. It is worth noticing that, while making detailed measurements, Lubinus used very simple instruments. He died on June 2, 1621 in Rostock. He was buried in the local Church of St. Jacob.
