Griffin Day

Griffin Day is a historic event related to the oldest extant document with an image of the Pomeranian Griffin on the Bogislaw II seal authenticating the document issued on 29 September 1214.

On the 800th Anniversary of the production of the document the Regional Council of the West Pomeranian Voivodship established the year 2014 as the Griffin Year. In that year the Griffin Day was celebrated for the first time. Since then we have celebrated it every year. Since 2017 its main highlight has been the Knights Tournament in which the Griffin Cup can be won. It is arranged to resemble the knights tournaments that used to take place in the Court of the Griffins.

During the Griffin Day the Old and Contemporary Art Craft Fair takes place in the Castle Courtyards. It presents how the work of craftsmen looked like centuries ago (weaving, pottery, blacksmith, wickerwork, minting, perfume making). There are also shows of creating everyday objects. The centuries-old cuisine can also be tasted.

The rich artistic programme also makes reference to the old traditions. You can see jugglers, sbandieratori (banner jugglers), stage shows (including the execution of Mikołaj Hinze, a famous jester from the Szczecin Castle) and outdoor performances.
